Youre right Tony, there was not the exact verbiage of “mandatory drug tests” However, there was verbiage of *having doctors screen for drug use* Is this a much different thing? Nice try quickly deflecting this verbiage that if from the Bush admin would make the progressives heavily question it.

  • James says:

Well, like conservatives are saying with Arizona’s new law…If you not breaking the law, you have nothing to worry about…Right?

They are just enforcing the law.

  • Duck Hetchel says:

Sure, if you’re a convicted crack addict.

  • Tony Z says:

    nothing about mandatory drug tests.

    nice try though.

  • isurvived says:

You mean Illegal drug use, don’t you? We all know your feelings about illegal and law breaking. Illegal immigration. Illegal drug use. I see a connection.

  • Rancid Stench of BO says:

    no, you read it right

  • beren says:

    You did misread.

  • John Galt says:

Well it would appear that you have read it correctly. I wonder if this was the plan all along and it is being done to prevent all those newly health insured people from seeing a doctor. I must admit it will help keep medical cost down if there is a large portion of the country paying for health insurance but never using it for fear of getting caught using drugs. I think this plan would work for welfare too. Can you imagine all the people being denied welfare based on having to pee in a cup?

  • Smells like New Screen Names says:

    No you’ve misread it.

What he is talking about is having doctors routinely ask about it, so they can offer treatment options. You’ve taken this and turned it into, have doctors report drug users.

You either grossly misread or are just spinning the actual facts:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced a revised approach to “confronting the complex challenge of drug use and its consequences,” putting more resources into drug prevention and treatment.

The new drug control strategy boosts community-based anti-drug programs, encourages health care providers to screen for drug problems before addiction sets in and expands treatment beyond specialty centers to mainstream health care facilities.

“By boosting community-based prevention, expanding treatment, strengthening law enforcement and working collaboratively with our global partners, we will reduce drug use and the great damage it causes in our communities,” Obama said. “I am confident that when we take the steps outlined in this strategy, we will make our country stronger and our people healthier and safer.”

The plan – the first drug plan unveiled by the Obama White House – calls for reducing the rate of youth drug use by 15 percent over the next five years and for similar reductions in chronic drug use, drug abuse deaths and drugged driving.

In an interview Monday, Gil Kerlikowske, the White House drug czar, said, “It changes the whole discussion about ending the war on drugs and recognizes that we have a responsibility to reduce our own drug use in this country.”

The new drug plan encourages health care professionals to ask patients questions about drug use even during routine treatment so that early intervention is possible. It also helps more states set up electronic databases to identify doctors who are overprescribing addictive pain killers.

  • EviL Liberal says:

I read the link and I can’t find the word “Test” for drug use any place the only line I did see was

“ask patients questions about drug use even during routine treatment so that early intervention is possible.”

I have already had this happen anyways a few years ago I would think any good Doctor would, when trying to find out what is wrong with someone.

it will be ok…………. your Doctor can’t tell the police about your drug use.

  • Slinky says:

Smells like new screen names is correct. Since the War on Drugs has been a dismal failure mandatory testing population wide is the next logical step…if you are a moron…Having doctors do it as part of the mandated insurance scam would be one way to get it in place with out a lot of screaming and shouting.

  • ? Sparkle ? says:

No. Your article didn’t say that see below. The Obama administration is trying to reduce Illegal drug use particularly among the youth. Anyway, it will be too expensive and neocons will sh^t in their pants. They will filibuster anything like that. ?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four decades after President Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs,” the White House on Tuesday announced a shift in national drug policy that would treat illegal drug use more as a public health issue and plunge more resources into prevention and treatment.

The new drug control strategy boosts community-based anti-drug programs, encourages health care providers to screen for drug problems before addiction sets in and expands treatment beyond specialty centers to mainstream health care facilities.

President Barack Obama called the plan a “balanced approach to confronting the complex challenge of drug use and its consequences.”

His drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, was more blunt.

“Calling it a war really limits your resources,” Kerlikowske told reporters. “Looking at this as both a public safety problem and a public health problem seems to make a lot more sense.”

The plan – the first drug strategy unveiled by the Obama White House – calls for reducing the rate of youth drug use by 15 percent over the next five years and for similar reductions in chronic drug use, drug abuse deaths and drugged driving.

The new drug plan encourages health care professionals to ask patients questions about drug use even during routine treatment so that early intervention is possible. It also helps more states set up electronic databases to identify doctors who are over-prescribing addictive pain killers.
