There are rehab facilities that specialize helping people who are also having mental health issues. Research the facility carefully because some rehabs are very clear that if there is a mental health problem, they can not give treatment.

So NOT put her in a that dabbles in mental health, it will almost certainly end badly. If a person uses drugs or alcohol to self-medicate, they won’t stop until they address their problems.

Over 90% of all drug & alcohol programs are 12step based (AA/NA). They are not equiped for mental health issues even though there is a 50% overlap. (50% of people with substance abuse issues have mental health issues; 50% of people with mental health issues have substance abuse issues.) Many people in AA & NA feel that taking medication means you’re not really sober/clean and that if you follow the program of AA correctly, your mental health problems will magically go away.

The rest of the rehabs are either Narconon (Scientology) which doesn’t believe in mental illness or deeply religious and believe God will take care of it or people are posessed.

Find a mental health clinic, most have a dual diagnosis program. Contact your local NAMI to find what’s available in your area:

I bounced in and out of 12step treatment for 20 years, it wasn’t until I got decent mental health help for depression that I was able to stay stopped.
