Kansas Drug Treatment Centers: New Treatments for ADHD? – Don’t Decide Until You Read This

New treatments for ADHD are continually being sought as doubts about existing treatments begin to cause concern. What are the ADHD new treatments, if any?

New Drugs?
The bad news is that, as yet, there have been no new advances in medicating with amphetamines or blood pressure medicine or even anti-depressants. Strattera is one of the fairly new treatments for ADHD but it is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. That means it is just another anti depressant.

The depressing fact is that amphetamines are still the basis for 90% of these drugs and the warning on the label is very clear. It says that taking these amphetamines for very long periods may lead to drug dependence.

There does not seem to be a drug which does not have rather alarming side effects. There are still concerns about neural development, weight loss and mental problems. It seems that any new treatments for ADHD which are pharmacologically based and are totally safe are a long way off.

Neurofeedback or biofeedback has shown some promising results but there is still a long way to go.

Diet can definitely help
One newspaper in the UK has reported that by using fish oils as a supplement, ADHD kids were able to manage their hyperactivity and restlessness better than a control group who were on the classic medication for ADHD which are basically amphetamines. That does not mean that this is a cure or can be hailed as one of the ADHD new treatments, but it can be a helpful addition. Also zinc and magnesium supplements have been found to be useful. The bottom line, though is giving our children a healthy diet which has all the nutrients and vitamins they need. I would only add fish oils if the rest of the diet is healthy. Smoothies are a great way of getting fruit and vegetables into the kids’ diet.

Green time activities
Instead of looking desperately for the latest trend or fad, a few simple changes in lifestyle for kids may well go a long way. The ABC for Fitness is a case in point. This was run in Kansas and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention organized it. Lots of schools participated and the results were striking.

There was a reduction of 30% of the children who had to take ADHD medication, simply because they were showing much fewer symptoms of restlessness, fidgeting and inattention. They no longer needed the medication. The schools who had not taken part had a only a 7% reduction. It was clear that the green time activities and sports activities were really helping to reduce the impact of ADHD. While certainly not one of the miracle ADHD new treatments, it still deserves a top slot in lifestyle changes.
