Causes of Prescription Drug Abuse?

Question by emilysaysholaa: Causes of Prescription Drug Abuse?
I’m doing a research paper on prescription drug abuse, I have two causes and I need another !
Plus, I’m in world literature so I’m supposed to tie it into world issues, not just America. Does anyone know any other countries with these kind of problems?

Thank you for your help!

Should Drug Companies Be Able to Advertise Prescription Drugs on TV?

Question by Rupert Roo: Should drug companies be able to advertise prescription drugs on TV?
This is a relatively new thing that wasn’t here 15 or so yrs ago. For some meds, like Viagra, it is a non-necessary drug. But I see a lot of blood pressure and cholesterol drugs advertised. Also they are advertising heart stents??? Those are usually placed by interventional cardiologists (highly specialized)! I agree in a free market, but I think that this advertising could be potentially hurtful to the health care system as a whole as well as specific patients individually. Please tell me what you think, or does John P. Consumer not really care about this? Also, what changed that this is a new thing now, is it just an influx of new drugs or did someone in marketing get a bright idea? Thanks.
Dude, Gardisil DOES in fact immunize against cervical cancer! The vast majority, and I don’t know if it’s 70 or 95%, but something like that is caused by these 2 strains of HPV that are covered by Gardisil. It’s a quadravalent vaccine that covers 4 strains; the 2 that cause mostly all warts and the 2 that cause mostly all cervical cancer. It’s a vaccine that DOES prevent cancer.
I forgot, that I think the only thing profit driven about Gardisil is that the vaccine costs from $ 200-400 and the cost for chemo and hosptial stay if you have cervical cancer and need an ICU bed can be enormous (more than 100k easy).

In a 2003 and 2005 report, the national institutes of health showed some pretty bleak figures.

They estimated that in 2005 that 48 million Americans, 20% of population, had abused prescription drugs.

Based off the 2002 survey, just that year, 4.7 million people used prescription drugs “non-medically” for the first time. This means new abusers of prescription medications on top of exister abusers.

Data for *new abusers* of drugs that year broke down as following:
* 2.5 million used pain relievers
* 1.2 million used tranquilizers
* 761,000 used stimulants
* 225,000 used sedatives

Drug Addiction- Prescription?

Question by TommyBBaLL: Drug Addiction- prescription?
My brother is addicted to oxy contin and has been for the passed 7 years. He has messed up repeatedly, and always comes up with a new bullshit story to explain to my mother and stepfather. They have known about his addiction for 4-5 years now but they continue to enable his problem. They pay for his rent and bills in order for him to sell oxycontin so he can take it himself. I try to explain to them that they feed his addiction but they neglect to here what I am telling them. Recently they placed him in a rehab facility where he spent all of 3 days. After rehab they bought him a plane ticket to florida to live with my grandparents in a elderly care facility. They schedule him a plane ticket to come back today, but he missed the plane ticket because he left the facility where my grandparents stay to work for someone which translates to me as hes doing it for his need of drugs. What can my parents do to actually help him out with his problem? I understand its my mothers son and she would do anything for him, but doesn’t it come to a time where enough is enough and you realize its time to let him go through trials and tribulations on his own.
