Do You Think My Friend Is Being Abused?

Question by Kate: Do you think my friend is being abused?
My friend and I used to be close, about 10 years ago, when we were in our thirties. We were pertually single. She drifted from relationship to relationship, but nothing long term.

Then, in her late 30s, she met Clyde. He was already married, but seperated from his wife. He had already been married twice before, had been a serious drug addict, both his exes had accused him of abuse … he seemed like bad news. But my friend loved him. My friend is smart and from a good family. She saw something in him, and he took her on vacations and sent her flowers all the time, and seemed to treat her very well.

Well, since then, I have hardly spoken to my friend at all — she kind of fell off the face of the Earth. A few years ago, I saw her and Clyde at a resturant, and he kept snarling at her and she kept laughing it off. I also heard him yelling at the waiter.

I never thought my friend was the type to tolerate abuse … she considered herself a free-thinker and a feminist … do you think something is wrong?

It is very possible. You say that Clyde has a drug record, and had been married three times. This does not look good. I suggest you talk to your friend, but be careful because she may get defensive and angry. Be calm and tell her you want to help, especially if you want to get back in touch with her.
