Atheists & Believers: What Are Some Good Organizations You Know of That Fight Against Hard Drug Addiction?

Question by Andy F: Atheists & Believers: What are some good organizations you know of that fight against hard drug addiction?
Here in Washington DC, there’s a group called “Second Genesis” that I’ve given money to that is supposed to be pretty successful in getting crack and heroin users off drugs, using a “tough love” method.

I think the founders / organizers are probably Jewish, judging from their literature, but I’m not sure of this.

Are there either religiously oriented or purely secular groups that you know about & recommend supporting, that are helping people to escape from substance abuse & addiction?

A charity local to me is called Broadreach House, they supply clean needles and heroine substitute to people on the streets and house people who are coming off drugs and help them get jobs and their lives back. They are funded mainly by the local health authority, but also by public donations. So are secular, if a little new age in their philosophy

ASHG 2010 Mtg.: “Epigenetics of Drug Addiction” (Dr. Eric Nestler) – TO VIEW THE FULL WEBCAST OF THIS SESSION, GO TO: www.ashg.org ASHG 2010 Annual Meeting Concurrent Invited Session II: “Methylating the Mind: The Epigenetics of Psychiatric Illness” Speaker: Dr. Eric J. Nestler, Mount Sinai School of Medicine November 4, 2010 (Washington, DC) DESCRIPTION: Psychiatric illnesses are among the leading causes of disability in the world, though the mechanisms underlying them are still largely mysterious. Challenges in identifying genes for psychiatric illness may be due in part to the underlying etiologic complexity, and epigenetics likely plays a crucial role as it links genes and environmental exposure. In particular, recent evidence points to a role for epigenetic mediators of stress in major depression and drug addiction. This session will bring together pioneers in this emerging field, that has now become amenable to population-based epigenetic studies, including whole genome epigenetic analysis targeted at nongenic sequence that might be epigenetic targets of disease.
